The Sakhalin fir ( Abies sachalinensis ) is a plant from the genus of fir ( Abies ) in the family of Pinaceae (Pinaceae).

The Sakhalin fir is a tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters. The trunk is smooth and almost white. The bark of young twigs is slightly hairy and the twigs are not furrowed and smooth. They are hairy gray or reddish gray. The bluish buds are very resinous, small and rounded in a hemispherical manner.

The needles are not parted and 3 to 4 inches long and about 1.5 millimeters wide. On its top, there is no, or only at the top, stomatal lines .

The cones, which are green-purple before maturity, are 2.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter and 5 to 7.5 centimeters long. The deck scales are protruding and recessed. The seeds ripen in September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Systematics and distribution

The Sakhalin fir was first published in 1868 by the Russian-Baltic geologist and botanist Friedrich Karl Schmidt (Fjodor Bogdanowitsch Schmidt) under Abies veitchii var. Sachalinensis in his work "Travels in the Amur Land and on the Sakhalin Island on behalf of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society ", pp. 175-176. Maxwell Tylden Masters introduced them in 1879 in the magazine "The Gardeners' Chronicle", new series, volume 12, page 588 as a separate species in the genus Abies .

The natural range of the Sakhalin fir is on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands , a small occurrence also exists in Kamchatka and there are other occurrences on Hokkaido in Japan. Abies sachalinensis thrives at altitudes of up to 1600 meters.

Of Abies sachalinensis several existing varieties :

  • Abies sachalinensis var. Gracilis (Kom.) Farjon (Syn .: Abies gracilis Kom. ): Of Abies sachalinensis var. Gracilis, there is only a very small population of around 0.2 square kilometers in the Semyachik Valley in East Kamchatka becomes.
  • Abies sachalinensis var. Mayriana Miyabe & Kudô : It occurs from Sakhalin to Hokkaido.
  • Abies sachalinensis var. Nemorensis Mayr : It occurs from Sakhalin to Hokkaido.
  • Abies sachalinensis (F.Schmidt) mast. var. sachalinensis : It occurs from Sakhalin to Hokkaido.

Wood

The wood of the Sakhalin fir is light and soft. It is easily rotten. It is mainly used for paper production and the manufacture of transport boxes.
