Sachs Harbor is a hamlet with 122 inhabitants (as of 2006) in the Inuvik region in the Northwest Territories , Canada . It is located on the southwest coast of Banks Island and is named after the ship Mary Sachs . This was part of a Canadian Arctic expedition in 1913. The two predominant languages are Inuvialuktun and English .
Sachs Harbor is mainly supplied by water (in summer) and by air (all year round) from Inuvik, 523 km south-west, or from Yellowknife, 1200 km south. The hamlet is the only permanent settlement on Banks Island. The residents provide for themselves through hunting, fishing and to a lesser extent through tourism. There is a goose hunt every spring. Banks Island is home to the largest colony of geese in North America . Three quarters of the world's musk ox population migrate across the island .
Sachs Harbor is located in the arctic tundra , which is characterized by long, extremely cold winters. Since many residents are engaged in fishing, hunting, and travel, they have significant knowledge of weather conditions , permafrost, and even erosion . However, due to the change in climate in recent years, the weather is more difficult to predict. Climate change is causing ice to break off earlier and thus seals to settle further south . The seals are the city's main food source. Salmon were spotted for the first time between 1999 and 2001, and new species of birds including robins and barn swallows , flies, the barrenground caribou and polar bear have now been spotted on the island. On April 26, 2006, the first known, free-born, grizzly polar bear mongrel was shot near the town.
Oil and gas reserves could provide jobs for Sachs Harbor residents for a few years - it is estimated that there are four to twelve billion barrels of oil and up to 1,800 km³ of natural gas in the Beaufort Sea . Environmentalists fear a threat to the endangered bowhead whale that lives off Sachs Harbor .
Two officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are stationed in Sachs Harbor . There is also a health center with a nurse .
