The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Suva.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral , also simply called Suva Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church in Suva , the capital of Fiji . It is under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is the seat of the Pope Paul VI in 1966 . founded Archdiocese of Suva , which includes the entire state. The current archbishop is Peter Loy Chong . The church, completed in 1902, is on Pratt Street and Murray Street.

The construction of the two-tower church began in 1895. The architecture of the neo-Romanesque building follows the models of Roman churches. Large quantities of sandstone from a quarry near Sydney (Australia) and wood from Quebec ( Canada ) were imported for the construction of the Sacred Heart Cathedral . The cathedral has stained glass windows and a crypt in the basement. The late Archbishop Petero Mataca was the first church dignitary to be buried in an adjoining room below the cathedral. The archbishops of Suva are to find their final resting place in the crypt.
