Der Hasenhüter is a German fairy tale film by Ursula Schmenger from 1977. The television film produced by DEFA on behalf of the GDR television station is loosely based on the fairy tale Der Hasenhüter and the King's Daughter by Ludwig Bechstein .
action
Konrad, a poor shepherd, wants the hand of the vain Princess Adelheid. The princess's kitchen maid, Anne, warns Konrad about the haughty and cold-hearted princess. But Konrad does not let himself be dissuaded and moves towards the castle. On the way he helps an old woman, Anna's godmother, at whose draw well the rope was cut by a hunter's shot. As a thank you, she gives Konrad a flute.
King Felsenherz and Princess Adelheid oblige Konrad to look after the king's rabbits. No animal is allowed to be lost, otherwise the shepherd threatens the dungeon. While Konrad is doing his job, both the king and his daughter try to buy a rabbit in disguise from Konrad, which would have failed. He sees through the wrong game and lets both earn a rabbit by having the princess kiss him while he lets the king kiss a donkey's hoof. Afterwards, both receive a rabbit, but when Konrad blows the flute that was given, the animals run back to him.
After he has mastered the task, the king demands unwillingly to accept the shepherd as his son-in-law, who must also "fill a sack full of lies", whereupon an empty sack is presented to him. Konrad then reports how the princess earned a rabbit from him. When he wants to reveal the experience with the camouflaged king, the king tells him to remain silent and agrees to the wedding. Konrad refuses the marriage and moves away with Anne, with whom he has since fallen in love, and her godmother.
Differences from the book
The film mostly sticks to the template from Bechstein's collection of fairy tales ; in contrast to this, the rabbit keeper in the book marries the princess at the end, the maid Anna does not appear.
In the original version, in order to obtain a rabbit, the shepherd forces the king to kiss the donkey's buttocks, and he forces the princess to have a "shepherd's hour". To prevent its revelation, she agrees to the wedding.

The fairy tale film had its television premiere on January 2, 1977 in the first program of the GDR television. On November 4, 2016 he appeared next to The Kidnapped Prince on DVD.
