IP5 - Island of the Pachyderms (Original title: IP 5 - L'île aux pachydermes ) is a French feature film from 1992 and the last film with Yves Montand . action

The film is designed as a road movie . The protagonists Tony and the 11-year-old jockey live in a Paris suburb. Tony is a graffiti artist, Jockey wants to become a rapper. When Jockey's father is hospitalized, they get to know the young nurse Gloria. Tony falls in love with her, but Gloria rejects him and moves to Toulouse. Tony and Jockey therefore set off for Toulouse: Tony to see Gloria again and Jockey to see snow and mountains once in a lifetime.

They have a car accident on the way. They get to know Leon. He's looking for the island of the pachyderms. Tony and Jockey join him and travel with him through the forests of the Pyrenees in search of the lake and the island. Leon left his lover there 40 years earlier because he wanted to go out into the world. After he was professionally successful and has traveled the world, he has now returned in his old age and is looking for her. However, he only finds her sister and learns that his lover drowned herself in the lake out of lovesickness.

Leon now helps Tony win the heart of Gloria and see Jockey, the mountains and the snow. While on the way to the mountain top with Jockey, who drives the car, he dies of a heart attack.

criticism

The lexicon of international film gave a very positive verdict: “An (eco) fairy tale about love and friendship, told in images of overwhelming beauty and poetic power, which despite some dramaturgical bumps through the acting of Yves Montand, has become a moving legacy of the grand seigneur of French film becomes."

Trivia

The film does not resolve what "IP5" means in the film title. A source says that “Ile de Pachyderme 5” is meant, without going into detail. Pachyderms are colloquially known as rhinos , elephants , hippos or tapirs , with rough, predominantly hairless, mostly gray skin. In the film, the term may refer to trees with particularly thick bark. At least in the German version this is not clarified in the film.
