Petero Mataca

Petero Mataca (born April 28, 1933 in Cawaci ; † June 30, 2014 in Suva ) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Suva .

Life

Petero Mataca attended St. John's College in Levuka and entered Saint John Cawaci College in Ovalau in 1950. He received through the Patriarch of Cilicia and Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Grégoire-Pierre XV. Cardinal Agagianian , on 19 December 1959 in Rome , the ordination . He was ordained along with 45 other priests, the only one from the South Pacific region. Mataca was active in the Vicariate Apostolic Fiji Islands , among other things as pastor of the parish of Saint Francis Xavier in Navunibitu.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 27, 1974 titular bishop of Siminina and auxiliary bishop in Suva . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Kasama , George Hamilton Pearce SM , on December 3, 1974; Co - consecrators were Pierre-Paul-Émile Martin SM, Archbishop Emeritus of Nouméa , and Victor Frederick Foley , Archbishop Emeritus of Suva.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 10, 1976. to the Archbishop of Suva. Petero Mataca developed the pastoral plan for the Fiji Islands in 1975. He founded a catechesis center in Navesi and initiated the construction of twelve secondary schools in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu .

Pope Benedict XVI On December 19, 2012, he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. He died at the age of 81 in Suva Private Hospital and is buried in the crypt of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva.
