Sadequain

Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi (* 1930 in Amroha , India , † 1987 in Karachi , Pakistan ) was the most famous painter and calligrapher in Pakistan. As the son of a Muslim Urdu-speaking calligrapher from Uttar Pradesh (northern India), he moved to Pakistan in the early 1950s. Based on the tradition of Islamic calligraphy, he experimented with lettering and later switched to pictorial painting with oil paints, but also felt-tip pens. His often iconographic and sometimes highly abstract portraits are well known. Sadequain also illustrated poems by liberal Pakistani poets such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Muhammad Iqbal . Since his name is also Syed, he is also descended from Fatima-tul-Zahra (the daughter of the Islamic prophet Mohammed ). He died in Karachi at the age of 57. He was a muhajir .
