The Sailhorse (in the early years "Seahorse") is an open lifting keeler for a crew of up to five people.

history

The Sailhorse has been built since 1967, the designer was Tom Manders from the Netherlands. The first 349 boats were still called Seahorse and had a shorter keel that was attached further forward. Seahorse bv built this "luvgierige" version with PU foam filling, which is supposed to guarantee the unsinkability of the boat, until the end of 1972. Such a foam-filled hull can become soaked with water over the years, which can be determined by weighing.

In 1973 and 1974 the "Seahorse Yachtenbouwmaatschappij" produced the hulls with the numbers 350 to 999. In 1974 and 1975 the numbers 1001 to 1449 were produced by "Sailhorse Jachtenbouwmaatschappij" using the Bayer depot process. Between 1975 and 1979 they were then produced by Cather Friesland bv using the Bayer depot process for the hull and “hand-lay-up” for the deck.

From 1980 to 1985 the shipyard Vlieger (NL) took over the production and from the sail number 2349 built air chambers in the hull. Vlieger built around 150 boats. The Sailhorse has been produced by Polybouw since 1990 and represented by De Kloet (NL) from number 2500 to number 2599.

From 2012 and from hull number 2600, the Sailhorse hull (type G) was completely redeveloped and given new shapes. The manufacturer is still Polybouw on Texel and the dealers are Baltic Windsport (D, Rostock) and PA Sailsport (NL).

Construction and sailing characteristics

The foamless boats have a length and width of 6 m × 2 m and are built without a rubber edge. Thanks to its lifting keel, the Sailhorse is easily trailerable and the 185 kg bomb keel gives it a high righting moment. Due to the underwater hull becoming flatter and flatter towards the aft , the boat spacer sheets can even slide. The flat stern requires upwind sailing in the wind. The boat is also suitable for regattas thanks to the genoa and spinnaker as well as a trapeze device .
