Saint Ann (also known as St Ann's Church) is a Roman Catholic church in the capital Oranjestad on the island of Aruba , it is under the patronage of Anna , the legendary mother of Mary , mother of Jesus .

history

The original Saint Ann church was on the site of today's Alto Vista Chapel . After the former church in the north of the island was abandoned, a new and larger Saint Ann church was built in Oranjestad in 1914. It was consecrated in 1919 by the Bishop of Willemstad Wilhelm Michel Ellis .

The church is the second most important religious meeting place for the Roman Catholic parish on Insel after the Alto Vista Chapel in Noord.

Facility

The oak-carved altarpiece in Saint Ann is an example of neo-Gothic sculpture carving. The woodwork was made in 1870 by Hendrik van der Geld in the Netherlands in the province of North Brabant and was first in the St. Antonius Abbey in Scheveningen . When the abbey was remodeled in 1928, the abbey donated the altar , communion bench and pulpit to the Netherlands Antilles Mission, which gave the works of art to the Saint Ann Church in Aruba. A renovation of the church took place in 2002.

Storm damage

On August 25, 2011, an early morning tropical cyclone caused severe damage to the roof of Saint Ann's Church and other buildings in Aruba. The historic altar, communion bench and pulpit remained undamaged, although the roof was torn open by the strong winds. The church was closed in a row. The church has since been renovated and the roof structure renewed.
