Saint Aubin's Fort (Channel Islands)
Saint Aubin's Fort

Saint Aubin's Fort is a fort on a rocky island in front of the port of Saint Aubin on the south coast of the Channel Island of Jersey .

The fort was built in the 1540s when Saint Aubin was the island's main port. It protected the entrance to the harbor. Saint Aubin later lost its role to the port of Saint Helier . In the English Civil War , the parliamentarians built the fort into a strong fortress with a bulwark. When the royalists the fortress yet conquered, they replaced the bulwark by a rampart of granite and elevated the tower by one floor.

Saint Aubin's Fort was also rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was used as a summer residence during the peaceful Victorian era . It was not until the Second World War , when the Germans occupied the Channel Islands and made it part of their Atlantic Wall , that guns were reinstalled on the fort and casemates made of concrete were added.

Today Saint Aubin's Fort, which is accessible from the main island of Jersey via a dam at low tide, serves as the headquarters of the Jersey Sea Scouts . It is not open to the public.
