Sal Rei ( Portuguese salt king , because of the salt deposits) is a city in the northwest of the island of Boa Vista in the southeast of the Cape Verde Islands and serves as the district and island capital. With 2122 inhabitants ( 2005 ), the city is the largest municipality in Cape Verde from the 18th century after Cidade Velha .
Sal Rei is on the island highway and thus connected to the towns of Rabil and the nearest Norte . To the west is the island of Sal Rei , which is partly sandy and partly grassy. To the north and northeast are mountains and even further to the north are Ponta do Sol and Cabo Santa Maria . Around Sal Rei there is a plain and to the south the Praia da Chave , which serves as the city beach. The land is very dry, it is rocky and uncultivated and there are few farms in the area of the place.
The road conditions are modest; Hotels, restaurants and bars form the main line of business after agriculture and other small businesses. The buildings are mainly on the bay. There is a soccer team called Académica Sal-Rei .
Parts of the population have left the island for other islands and around the world. Income is modest to poor.
