Saldula arenicola is a bug fromthe bank bug family (Saldidae). The name is derived from the habitat preferences of the species: “arena” = sand, “colere” = to inhabit.

features

The bugs are 3.4 to 4.6 millimeters long. The genus Saldula includes species in which the pronotum is completely black and in which the hemielytres completely overlap. Species identification is often difficult. Saldula arenicola is relatively easy to identify because it has a characteristic pattern with a pale bar above the corium of the hemielytras, two pale spots on the clavus at the same level and usually two pale spots along the costal margin closer to the membrane. The first part of the antennae is pale, with a black tip, the second is black, with a pale tip.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from North Africa and the northern Afrotropic islands across western and central Europe to the south of Scandinavia and Great Britain. In the east the distribution extends to Siberia and China. In southern Europe the species has only been found sporadically, in Germany it is only common in the northern half and is increasingly rare in the south. In Austria it is only proven sporadically. The species is very rare in Great Britain and only recorded on the cliffs of Hampshire , Dorset and Devon . Mostly sandy soils on vegetation-free flowing waters are settled, but also the edges of still waters regardless of size. The species is rarely found on the coast.

Way of life

The species is very agile and is considered a pioneer species in northern Germany on the bare sandy shores of newly formed excavation waters. One or two generations are trained each year. The wintering takes place as an imago .
