Saldula palustris is a bug fromthe bank bug family (Saldidae).
features
The bugs are 2.9 to 4.5 millimeters long. The genus Saldula includes species in which the pronotum is completely black and in which the hemielytres completely overlap. Species identification is often difficult. In Saldula palustris , the dark line on the middle of the rails ( tibia ) of the forelegs is continuous with the dark base and the pale pattern on the corium does not form an oblique band. The species is practically indistinguishable from Saldula pallipes , which, however, usually occurs in habitats influenced by freshwater. There are macroptere (long-winged) and brachyptere animals with regressed hemielytres.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed on the European coasts south to tropical Africa and east to China and Japan. In Central Europe it occurs on the North Sea coast and only occasionally on the Baltic Sea and the salty inland habitats of Northern Germany. In Austria it is only known from the Neusiedler Basin. The species is common on the coasts and rare in the interior.
Different salty habitats are settled. In the tidal range, both nymphs and adults can survive floods of several hours.
Way of life
The long-winged animals can fly well and can occasionally be observed at night using artificial light sources. The wintering takes place as an imago . One generation occurs per year in northern Germany, with most of the new generation animals appearing in August.
