( Fabricius , 1794)

Saldula pallipes is a bug fromthe bank bug family (Saldidae).

features

The bugs are 3.4 to 5.0 millimeters long. The genus Saldula includes species in which the pronotum is completely black and in which the hemielytres completely overlap. Species identification is often difficult. Saldula pallipes is practically indistinguishable from pale forms of Saldula palustris , but occurs in salt-influenced habitats. The dark line on the rails ( tibia ) of the forelegs is continuous with the basal pattern, through which one can distinguish the type of Saldula saltatoria . There are macroptere (long-winged) and brachyptere animals with regressed hemielytres.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread and occurs in the entire Palearctic and Nearctic and sometimes even in the tropics of the New World. It is widespread in Central Europe and common in many places.

In particular, muddy soils on the banks of various bodies of water, such as fresh, brackish and salt water, are populated. The animals are preferably found in heavily eutrophicated habitats, more on loamy than on acidic soils. In England it has been observed that animals living in the salt marshes of the seashore penetrate as far as the areas that are regularly flooded by the tides . The species tolerates the flooding without problems. However, the species is not infrequently found far from water, for example in Northern Germany. Habitat here are sparsely vegetated areas with temporary puddles on dense, loamy soil.

Way of life

The wintering takes place as an imago . The animals are already active from March and, under good conditions, can train two generations per year.
