Salim Alafenisch
Salim Alafenisch (* 1948 in the Negev , Israel ) is a German-speaking Palestinian writer with Israeli citizenship. In his books he gives insights into the life and culture of the Bedouins.
Life
Alafenisch was born the son of a Bedouin sheikh. After a childhood as a camel herder, he learned to read and write at the age of 14 and went to high school in Nazareth . He studied sociology , ethnology and psychology in London and Heidelberg . Alafenisch lives today as a freelance writer and storyteller in Heidelberg.
Literary background
Alafenisch's themes come from his own experience and life story. He writes about the clash of modernity and tradition, as well as the everyday life of nomads in the present. He draws on a rich oral storytelling tradition that he got to know as a child in his father's tent or at the Bedouin campfire at night. He describes Al Mutanabbi , Taufiq el Hakim and Ahmed Shauqi from the Arabic-speaking area as well as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Hermann Hesse and Thomas Mann as his literary role models .
