chronology
... very 'eavy ... very' umble (1970) Salisbury Look at Yourself (1971)

Salisbury is the second studio album by the British rock band Uriah Heep . Inspired by a stay in the city of the same name, Salisbury , the LP was recorded from October to November 1970, was released in England in February 1971 and a little later in the USA. As with … very 'eavy… very' umble , the US edition has a completely different cover and a slightly different track list (Simon the Bullet Freak, B-side of the single Lady in Black , instead of Bird of Prey).

With the title song, Uriah Heep ventured into a really long song for the first time, characterized by Ken Hensley's organ and a large brass section, a solemn beginning that leads to an orgiastic solo.

Lady in Black is the song that many associate with the name Uriah Heep , but which only became a real hit years later.

Between rather calm tones and powerful guitar riffs, the band continued to cultivate their typical set vocals, which made them a reference for many other bands in matters of polyphonic choirs.

The original cover of the album showed a main battle tank of the type Chieftain , which in connection with the title of the album alludes to the Salisbury Plain , a large military training area in the Salisbury area. For the American version, however, the record company feared that the cover would be unsuitable and harmful to sales because of the Vietnam War , and changed the cover motif.

Information about the bonus tracks

  • All bonus tracks from the re-releases from 1996 and 2003 as well as all songs from the bonus CD from 2016 are unreleased versions at the time of publication, unless otherwise stated in brackets.
  • The single edit of "High Priestess" included on the 1996 re-release is described in the booklet as originally being released as a single. This seems to be a bug, however, as the version of the song featured on the promo single has a playing time of 2:14 and the single version on the regular singles has a playing time of 3:39. So this would be the first release of this single edit.
  • The live version of "Salisbury" included on the bonus CD of the 2016 re-release was probably recorded on November 21, 1971 at The Greyhound in Croydon, London.

useful information

  • In the US and Canadian edition of the album, which has a completely different cover artwork, the song "Bird of Prey" was replaced by "Simon the Bullet Freak" because "Bird of Prey" was already on the US and Canadian edition of the previous studio album ... Very 'Eavy ... Very' Umble . "High Priestess" moves to the top of the track list instead of "Bird of Prey", while "Simon the Bullet Freak" takes the original position of "High Priestess".
  • "Simon the Bullet Freak" was featured on several editions of the single Lady in Black entitled "Simon the Bullit Freak".
  • The single version of "High Priestess" has the same playing time with 3:39 as the album version, but differs from this one. This can already be seen in the shorter intro of the single version.
