Salma (poet)

Salma (* 1972 in Thuvarankurichi as A. Rokkaiah ) is an Indian poet from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

Life

Salma grew up in Thuvarankurichi, a small village in the Tiruchirappalli District, which is inhabited by members of the Muslim minority in Tamil Nadu . From the onset of puberty, at the age of thirteen until her arranged marriage, she was isolated from the outside world by her family and resisted arranged marriage for nine years . At the age of 22 she married a local politician ( Malik ) and remained locked in her husband's house. Salma's only reading was the pages of the newspaper in which the vegetables are wrapped. With the help of her mother, she smuggled secretly written poems to a publisher. He published Salma's poetry and at the instigation of the publisher she traveled to Chennai for the first time in her life .

Salma writes in the Tamil language ; their works have been translated into Hindi , Urdu , Malayalam, and the English language.
