content
In Thuvarankurichi, a small south Indian village inhabited by members of the Muslim minority in Tamil Nadu , Salma is isolated from the outside world by her family from the onset of puberty until her arranged marriage. The thirteen-year-old, hungry for education, has resisted the arranged marriage for nine years - and is therefore locked in her barren room. Now 22 years old, Salma marries a local politician ( Malik ), but remains a prisoner, now in her husband's house. Salma's only reading is the pages of the newspaper in which the vegetables are wrapped. With the support of her mother, she smuggles secretly written poems to a publisher. This publishes Salma's poetry: This changes her life radically, and at the instigation of the publisher she travels to Chennai for the first time in her life . As a now respected poet, she applies for political offices and inspires her sisters and other women with her pursuit of personal independence.

Reviews
“Above all, the mutual oppression of women maintains the status quo. In Salma, the life of Muslim women is not exoticized, but told calmly and with great respect. "
