The Salmo-Priest Wilderness is a 41,335 acres (167.28 km²) wilderness area in the Selkirk Mountains in the extreme northeast of Washington state , which is within the Colville National Forest and Kaniksu National Forest . The closest location is Metaline Falls .
topography
The high-altitude Salmo-Priest Wilderness is a roughly wishbone- shaped area in the high elevations of the Selkirk Mountains, two of which mountain ranges meet at 6,828 ft (2,081 m) high Salmo Mountain . The eastern chain lies somewhat lower, is more wooded, more rounded and therefore more accessible than the steep-walled, rock-crowned western chain. Streams have dug deep gullies in both chains, which drain into the Priest River in Idaho in the east and over Sullivan Creek and Salmo River into the Pend Oreille River in the west.
fauna
The rugged area is home to several endangered and threatened species, including woodland caribous , grizzlies, and wolves . The Selkirk Mountains, especially the Salmo-Priest Wilderness, are the last remaining refuge for forest caribous in the Continental United States . Common species are mule deer , white-tailed deer , elk , American Black Bear , Puma , Bobcat , Badger , Pine Marten , Canadian lynx , bighorn sheep and elk .
flora
Much of the Salmo-Priest Wilderness consists of stocks of Douglas fir and Western American hemlocks . Primary forest from the giant tree of life is also found in the area.
hike
The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail crosses the Salmo-Priest Wilderness. Approximately 23 mi (37 km) (out of a total of 1,200 mi (1,931 km)) of the PNT are in this wilderness area. The 29.7 mi (47.8 km) long Shedroof Divide Trail , designated a National Recreation Trail in 1981 , also runs through the area.
Trivia
The Salmo-Priest Wilderness area is home to the fictional town of Twin Peaks , the location of the popular ABC TV series of the same name, which first aired in 1990-92.
