The Salmo River is a 58 km long right tributary of the Pend Oreille River in the Regional District of Central Kootenay in the southeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia .
The source of the Salmo River is a small lake 10 km south of Nelson at an altitude of about 1020 m . Located in the Selkirk Mountains , the valley is drained to the north via Cottonwood Creek to the Kootenay River . The Salmo River flows through the valley in a southerly direction. The British Columbia Highway 6 ( Nelson Nelway Highway ) follows the river to 7 km from the mouth. The river passes the village of Ymir and the municipality of Salmo . 12 km above the mouth, the South Salmo River , the most important tributary of the Salmo River, meets the river from the southeast. The last 7 km the Salmo River turns west and finally flows 3 km north of the US border into the Pend Oreille River. This has been dammed since 1979 by the Seven Mile Dam located 10 km downstream at the confluence of the Salmo River.
Hydrology
The catchment area of the Salmo River covers an area of 1300 km². The mean discharge 8 km above the mouth is 31.9 m³ / s. The highest runoffs usually occur in May and June.
Fish fauna
The largest species of fish in the Salmo River is the bull trout ( Salvelinus confluentus ). The endangered species can reach a length of one meter and an age of up to 25 years. The relatively small population was the focus of various studies in the 1990s and early 2000s. An RFID chip was transplanted into several copies in order to learn more about their migration behavior in the river system by locating them.
