Salomon Buber
Salomon Buber (also: Salomo Buber ; born February 2, 1827 in Lemberg , Austrian Empire ; died December 28, 1906 in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary ) was a Jewish scholar of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the first academic editor and critical editor of various midrashim and an active member of the Galician Haskala . Salomon Buber was Martin Buber's grandfather .
Life
Solomon Buber was a grain trader, a member of the board of directors of various credit institutions and banks (in recognition of his services in this regard, he received the title of Chamber of Commerce Council , then Imperial Councilor ), large landowner and owner of phosphate mines. He was also a leading figure in the administration of the Jewish community as well as many Jewish and non-Jewish, above all charitable organizations in Lviv, but also national associations.
His scientific interest in the field of Jewish history and literature had already awakened in his early youth - under the influence of reading Krochmal , Rapoport , and especially Zunzen - and his declared goal was, in the pursuit of which he spared no expense or effort it is to make a maximum number of only handwritten collections of Haggadic compilations and midrashim accessible to the public. He had the manuscripts and rare editions copied or edited and provided them with introductions and comments, which in this way received source material for the future and, on the other hand, made literary and intellectual history accessible.
The knowledge he gained in this way, which met with broad approval among Jewish scholars, he published in various journals ( Jeschurun , Haschachar , Hameliz , Hamaggid, etc.) as well as in commemorative publications and other collective works.
