Salomon Krenberger

Salomon Krenberger (born January 23, 1861 in Triesch , † February 1, 1931 in Vienna ) was a Czech-Austrian pedagogue.

Live and act

Krenberger, who comes from a Jewish family, studied at the University of Vienna, where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In 1890 he founded a private educational institution for children with limited ability in Tulln , which was relocated to Vienna-Hacking (XIII / 8) in 1896 . In 1914 he took over the management of the Israelite Deaf-Mute Institute in Vienna (until 1926). In 1927 he was appointed government councilor. In 1908, Krenberger published Itard's report on the savage von Aveyron in German and in 1912 published the first German translation of Édouard Séguin's main work : The idiot and its treatment by psychological methods . His international orientation, particularly towards France, is also reflected in the founding and editing of two specialist magazines: the Eos magazine, founded in 1905 . Quarterly magazine for the knowledge and treatment of adolescent abnormalities , which could assert itself until 1920. And the professional journal Levana, founded in 1929 , international scientific contributions to the whole of curative education , which, however, did not exist beyond the first year. In the foreword to the first year, Krenberger describes their goals as follows:

“The quarterly publication 'Levana' [...] aims to promote scientific and practical work on the blind, deaf and dumb, idiots, feeble-minded people, the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, speech-impaired people, psychopaths and cripples. Doctors and teachers from all over the world of culture will have their say here, and eminent scholars and specialists will be employees. The contributions are intended to be a link between those of all nations who strive together. The history of each branch of curative education, articles from practice, scientific discussions of the problems, reviews are all parts of the new journal. "

In addition to his educational work, Krenberger was politically active in the Zionist movement and at times chairman of the Zionist national organization in Austria. He was buried on February 3, 1931 in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
