The Salto-Caxias dam (Usina Hidrelétrica de Salto Caxias, official name: Governador-José-Richa-Reservoir and Hydroelectric Power Plant) at Iguaçu near Caxias in Paraná , Brazil dams a reservoir that covers an area of 180 km². The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of rolled concrete (RCC) and one of the largest of its kind on earth.
It is the first dam upstream of the Iguazú Falls and was built between 1995 and 1999.
The plant is operated by Copel , who named it after José Richa , Governor of Paraná between 1983 and 1986.
Barrier structure
The José Richa dam is 67 m high and 1100 m long. The planner, Intertechne Consultores Associados, decided together with the client, Copel, that a rolled concrete dam would be 25% cheaper than a rubble dam. Cracks were found in the dam during the 1998 flood and Copel announced that it would repair them in 2005.
Hydroelectric power plant
The power plant is 180 m long and contains four 310 MW generators built by Ansaldo Coemsa. Each generator is formed by a vertical axis Francis turbine by Kvaerner driven. The hydropower plant has a nominal output of 1240 MW. 5431 GWh of electricity can be generated annually . On the western side of the dam there are 15 inlets to the power plant. From the intake structure, four carbon steel pressure pipes continue, each 11 m in diameter and 107 m long. A consortium made up of BSA, Coemsa and Barefame supplied the pressure pipes.
Flood relief
The structure has a flood relief with 14 radial closures, each of which is 16.5 m wide and 20 m high, in order to drain water into the channel to the main river. It can discharge almost 50,000 m³ / s.
Relocation program
25% of the $ 1 billion cost was spent on a relocation program for the 1,000 families who were forced to relocate by the reservoir's impoundment. The program includes building community centers, roads and churches, and payments for health, environmental protection and land provision.
