Saltwater Band
The Saltwater Band is an Australian music group from Galiwin'ku on Elcho Island (one of the Wessel Islands ), about 560 kilometers from Darwin . The members belong to the Yolngu ethnic group and mostly sing in their mother tongue . Her songs are a mixture of traditional songs and reggae or ska- influenced pop . One of the band members, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu , who is currently also working solo, is a close relative of Mandawuy Yunupingu, the singer of Yothu Yindi , and has been a member of this group in the past .
The first CD of the Saltwater Band , Gapu Damurrun , sold more than 10,000 times, at the time a record for a Musikakt the Northern Territory. Her music album Djarridjarri was nominated in 2004 for the Aria Music Award for best world music album . It also received the Deadly Award for best album release of the year.
