Salvatore Lilli

Salvatore Lilli (born June 19, 1853 in Cappadocia , † November 22, 1895 in Mujuk Deresi near Marasc, Turkey) was an Italian Catholic priest and martyr .

Life

Salvatore Lilli was born in 1853 to Vincenzo and Annunziata Lilli in Cappadocia near L'Aquila . He entered the Franciscan Order in 1870 and made his vows on August 6, 1871. He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1878 in Bethlehem . He worked as a missionary in Lesser Armenia , where he built schools, hospitals and orphanages and taught the population about hygiene. During the cholera epidemic in 1891, he worked as a nurse.

In 1895 Salvatore Lilli was pastor and superior of the Franciscan branch in Mujuk Deresi. He was imprisoned by the Ottoman military with seven companions and was supposed to be forced to convert to Islam. When he and his companions refused, they were killed; their bodies were burned.

Salvatore Lilli and his companions were beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 3, 1982 . Her feast day is November 22nd.
