The Salzburg Advent Singing in the Great Festival Hall is the nucleus and the model for numerous "Advent Singing" throughout the German-speaking area. Around 1.7 million visitors (around 36,000 annually) have already attended this event during Salzburg Advent. Over 150 singers, musicians, actors and shepherd children from Salzburg and the neighboring cultural regions take part in this event.

The overall artistic direction and program is in the hands of Hans Köhl. As chairman of the organizer Salzburger Heimatwerk , he and his board colleague Stefan Sperr have been responsible for the overall management of this event since 1999.

history

In 1946, Tobi Reiser organized a Salzburg Advent Singing for friends and companions for the first time in a society's home on the Rudolfskai in Salzburg. In the same year, the Salzburger Heimatwerk was set up as a cooperative.

After the Advent gathering became more and more popular, in 1950 they moved to the Kaisersaal of the Salzburg Residence . At the same time, the first Advent blowing from the carillon tower took place to get in the mood for Advent singing. For reasons of space, the company moved to the Great Aula of the University of Salzburg in 1952 . Karl Heinrich Waggerl (1897–1973) made his debut and read the “Little Christkindl Stories” for the first time. The genre “Advent singing”, which did not exist until its founding in 1946, became a synonym for other events of a similar format.

In 1960, at the invitation of Josef Klaus, the Salzburg Advent Singing with seven performances took place for the first time in the newly built Great Festival Hall. In 1974, Tobi Reiser, the founder of the Salzburg Advent Singing and head of the Salzburg Heimatwerk, died.

His son Tobias Reiser d. J. took over the management of the Salzburger Heimatwerk and the Salzburg Advent Singing. From 1980, with the involvement of the set designer Siegwulf Turek, major changes were made to the stage design, lighting and programming. The Salzburg Advent Singing developed into a scenic oratorio with parallels and connections between biblical events and the present. In 1996 the Salzburger Heimatwerk celebrated its 50th anniversary with the Salzburg Advent Singing. The scenic oratorio “Es war der Engel Gabriel” became the climax of Tobias Reiser the Elder's compositions with compositions by Wilhelm Keller. J., who died unexpectedly in 1999 at the age of 53.

Hans Köhl and Stefan Sperr took over the overall management of the Salzburg Advent Singing, with Hans Köhl being given the main responsibility. Approaches such as putting the Advent events into an action frame from the year of foundation in 1946 or bringing the story into a socio-cultural context with the creators of the Salzburg Christmas carol " Silent Night, Holy Night " were realized in new scenic and musical works.

Despite the increasing number of "competitor Advent singing", the influx of the Salzburg Advent singing continues unabated with around 36,000 guests annually. Whereas in the past a work was performed over several years, a new or fundamentally revised Salzburg Advent Singing has been staged every year since 2005.
