Samuel "Sam" Baddeley (born September 12, 1884 in Norton-in-the-Moors , † 1958 ) was an English football player .
Career
Baddeley played for the amateur clubs Ball Green , Endon and Norton before joining Burslem Port Vale in October 1905 . There he first played in his traditional position as a half-forward, on which he made his debut in the Football League Second Division on September 1, 1906 in a 2-1 defeat against Leicester Fosse . From the end of October 1906 he moved back to the team, but was henceforth called up on the middle runner position and came to 30 league appearances by the end of the season. Mostly he formed the runner row together with Bert Eardley and Joe Holyhead , in the later course of the season Eardley was replaced by Joe Brough .
During the break of the season, Port Vale announced its withdrawal from the Football League for financial reasons , Baddeley then joined city rivals and former league rivals FC Stoke , where his cousins, the brothers Amos and George Baddeley , already played. While his cousins came regularly to missions, Baddeley played only one competitive game for the first team in the second division season 1907/08 , mostly the middle position was occupied by Louis Williams . At the end of the season, Stoke also withdrew from the Football League and entered the Birmingham & District League and the Southern League for the next few years ; while he was also involved in the championships in 1911 (B&DL) and as a supplementary player in 1915 (Second Division of the SL), by 1915 he had nine goals in 203 competitive appearances.
In 1910 (1: 2 against the reserves of Aston Villa ) and 1914 (2: 1 in the replay against Port Vale) he was with Stoke in the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup . In November 1913 he also won the Staffordshire Senior Cup with the club through a 4-2 win over FC Walsall , with Baddeley's game over during the first half: after a foul on Walsall's left winger Wootton , the latter retaliated with a Slap in the face that did not go unrequited. The referee sent both players off the field Baddeley was after beginning of the year in the first-round replay of the FA Cup against Reading FC (0 Result: 3) was sent off for rough play of the field, blocked for 28 days.
In the summer of 1915 Stoke was elected back to the Football League, with the suspension of regular play for four years due to the First World War , Baddeley's high-class football career ended. Later he is said to have played for Kidsgrove Wellington .
