Sam French

Sam French (* 1976 ) is an American film director and screenwriter who was nominated for an Oscar in 2013 .

Career

Sam French grew up in Wayne , a suburb of Philadelphia . He is the son of the architect Sam French († 1994) and his wife Mary. The couple have a younger daughter. French first attended Episcopal Academy until 1994 and then Williams College , where he graduated in 1998. Then he went to New York City . He began his film career in 2000 as a production assistant for the film Strangers with Candy . In 2002 he moved to Los Angeles and studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts until 2006 , where he obtained a Master of Fine Artsattained. In the same year he worked as a camera assistant for the film Zombie Prom . With Over the Line he wrote his first script for a short film, which he also took over the direction of. The film screened at several film festivals and was awarded at the Beverly Hills Film Festival. French then directed commercials and music videos.

In 2008, French went to Afghanistan for five years because his partner at the time had started a job at the British embassy in Kabul . There he founded the production company Development Pictures. Two years later, alongside Afghan-Canadian documentary filmmakers Ariel Nasr and Leslie Knott, he co-founded the non-profit Afghan Film Project , which promotes local filmmakers and the film industry. In 2012, French co- directed the short film Buzkashi Boys with Ariel Nasr , which was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2013 Academy Awards . The film was shot in Kabul and is about two friends who grow up in Afghanistan and play the national sport of Buzkashi . It was the first production by the Afghan Film Project .
