Near Samalut is the Coptic Orthodox Monastery of the Virgin Mary , an important Christian pilgrimage site. The church of Samalut was built in 328 by Empress Helena , mother of Constantine the Great , in one of the places where the Holy Family believed to have stayed during their flight to Egypt.
While there are numerous Christians here, the population of Minya Governorate is predominantly Muslim.
