Urine collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The urine collection is the amount of urine collected over a certain period of time, in the strict sense the 24-hour collection urine for performing a quantitative laboratory analysis. Certain medications may be discontinued beforehand by the doctor. It can also be the case that some time beforehand and during the collection, foods that influence the test result must be temporarily removed from the menu.

The urine collection or samples taken from it must be stored in a cool place protected from light (e.g. in the refrigerator).

Proceed as follows to correctly collect urine over the period X:

  • Time 0: emptying the bladder, preferably in the morning after getting up. This urine is discarded and does not go into the collection bottle.
  • Period X: All of the resulting urine from the specific collection period is collected.
  • Time 0 + X: End of the collection period after X hours. The bladder must be completely emptied again. This urine is also collected.

Occasionally, chemicals have to be added to the urine during the collection period to stabilize the substances to be examined. Thorough shaking is important after adding and before taking a sample - to shake up any sediment.

The 24-hour amount of urine can be determined after the collection is complete. The laboratory examination must be carried out promptly, for example without a weekend in between.
