Ludwig Bamberg Collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ludwig Collection in Bamberg is one of the most important private collections of its kind in the faience and porcelain sector . Since 1995 the Old Town Hall has housed the largest private porcelain collection in Europe, which the collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig gave to the Bamberg museums on permanent loan.

The collection is characterized by its range. It covers a large temporal and geographical spectrum, starting with ancient and pre-Columbian art, art from Africa, China and India, to testimonies from all epochs of European art history.

The porcelain collection of the Ludwig couple provides an overview of the early work of the Meissen manufactory . Above all, an overview can be gained of the early work of this famous first European porcelain manufacture.

The second focus of the collection deals with Strasbourg faience. The work of the Hannong family is one of the highlights of 18th century ceramic art. As comparative examples, items from smaller porcelain manufacturers such as Höchst , Nymphenburg , Fürstenberg , Ansbach and others are also represented with some exhibits.

During the annual Christmas and nativity town Bamberg event , a large baroque nativity scene from Rottenburg am Neckar consisting of over 400 figures is presented.
