Sammy Lee (actually Samuel Levy , born May 26, 1890 in New York City , New York , USA ; † March 30, 1968 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) was an American dancer, choreographer and director of short films.

Life

As a child, Sammy Lee was an avid dancer and performed in children's performances. He later formed the dance duo Norton & Lee with Ruby Norton for six years . In 1920 he began to take over the choreography of stage shows on Broadway. In 1927 he became dance director of the very successful Ziegfeld Follies . Producer Ziegfeld let Lee work on his successful productions Showboat , Rio Rita and Midnight Frolics .

In 1929, Sammy Lee signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . His first film was the musical The Hollywood Revue of 1929 . In 1930 he left the studio to continue to work on theater musicals. Lee returned to Hollywood in 1933, this time to 20th Century Fox . Now the success also came. I.a. Lee worked on the famous musical I dance just for you ( Dancing Lady ). He was nominated twice for an Oscar in the former Best Dance Director category, in 1936 for King of Burlesque and in 1938 for Ali Baba Goes to Town . In 1937 he went back to MGM. Here he not only worked as a dance director for film musicals. He also directed 20 short films. In 1944 and 1945 he was also transferred to other studios, such as B. Columbia Pictures , loaned. His last film work was in 1945 for Paramount Pictures ( bandits without a mask ).

Sammy Lee died on March 30, 1968 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, at the age of 77.
