Samuel Cooper

Samuel Cooper (* 1609 - May 5, 1672 in London ) was an English miniature painter .

Life

Like his older brother Alexander Cooper, he attended the school of his uncle John Hoskins .

His miniatures are characterized by the expressive use of color and brush in the Baroque style on this small format. He worked on behalf of the Commonwealth for Oliver Cromwell , King Charles II , the circles of the restored monarchy and the court.

Cooper also painted on ivory and parchment - and also designed coins.

Works (selection)

This miniature was sold at Sotheby's London in June 2007 at £ 535,000, the highest ever sales price for a miniature.
