Samuel Georg Herdt ( 1755 in Mainz - February 19, 1818 ) was a German clergyman and theater actor .

Life

Herdt initially complied with the wishes of his parents, who wanted him as a clergyman. In Mainz he rose to Canonicus . His desire to become an actor was stronger, however, and after taking lessons he made his successful debut in 1782 as "Colonel" in Henriette in Hamburg. He stayed there until 1786 and then went to the Nationaltheater Berlin , where he made his debut on April 6, 1786 as "Odoardo" in Emilia Galotti . He never left this stage and was retired on May 12, 1817. Even after his retirement, he occasionally appeared in the roles of a father on special occasions. Herdt died on February 19, 1818.

The Berlin audience particularly appreciated his achievements as “Oberförster” ( hunter ), “Swiss” ( robber ), “Miller” ( cabal and love ), “Verrina” ( Fiesco ) and “Ritter von Neuss” in Joseph Marius von Babos Otto von Wittelsbach . In this role in particular, it was set up as a model for the younger generation. Herdt was a thinking, extremely hardworking actor who, even if he was not among the first to be counted among the first lights of his time, nevertheless held an extremely honorable position in the theater. He particularly achieved dark and rumbling, but also humorous old people. His inadequate study of the roles brought him some success. He never succeeded in achieving total independence from the prompter .

On February 16, 1788, he married the actress Dorothea Charlotte Rademacher .
