Samuel Heinrich Catel

Samuel Heinrich Catel (born April 1, 1758 in Halberstadt , † June 29, 1838 in Berlin ) was a German preacher and educator of French origin.

Life

Catel was of Huguenot descent, his ancestor Daniel Catel from Sedan, Ardennes, France came to Berlin around 1688. He is distantly related to the artists Franz Ludwig and Ludwig Catel .

After studying at a seminary , Catel was appointed as a preacher in Strasburg (Uckermark) in 1778 . He stayed there until spring 1781 and then moved to the same office in Brandenburg an der Havel . After two years he came to the French community in Berlin as a catechist in 1783 .

In the spring of 1793, Catel was appointed to the French grammar school in Berlin and he worked there until his retirement as a professor of the Greek language . Politically active, he became a member of the editorial board of the Berliner Politische Zeitung in 1803 . In addition, over the years he created a considerable amount of work as a translator.

Catel died on June 29, 1838 at the age of 80 and found his final resting place in the French cemetery in Berlin.
