Samuel Ringier

Samuel Ringier (born June 7, 1767 in Zofingen ; † March 26, 1826 there ; entitled to live in Zofingen) was a Swiss politician . He is best known for his design of the flag and coat of arms of the canton of Aargau .

In 1791 Ringier became a member of the Council of Forty in the city of Zofingen, which at that time was still in the subject area of ​​the Bernese Aargau . In addition, he was city judge from 1793. After the mediation act issued by Napoleon Bonaparte came into force on March 10, 1803, he was a member of the seven-member provisional government commission that formed the executive in the canton of Aargau until the first elections. On behalf of his council colleagues, Ringier designed the flag and coat of arms of the new state, which were approved at the meeting on April 20, 1803 and, apart from minor design changes, are still in use today. From 1813 to 1819 Ringier was a councilor in Zofingen, and he also served as a justice of the peace.
