Silva played his composition for the first time in July 1901 and dedicated it at the beginning of the following year to Pablo Riccheri , Minister of War under Julio Argentino Roca . Riccheri was grateful to Silva for his tribute and asked to name the march after the battle of San Lorenzo. Contrary to popular belief that the march was initially named San Martín (after José de San Martín ), this was never the name of this composition.

In October 1902, the march at the Convento de San Carlos Borromeo was performed publicly for the first time and made the official march of the Argentine armed forces . The march received its text in 1907.

From 1946 to 1959, the San Lorenzo March was an official symbol of the Argentine presidential office and was played at every public appearance by the head of state. Before and after this function was fulfilled by the Marcha de Ituzaingó .

When the Wehrmacht marched into Paris in 1940 , the San Lorenzo March was played. During the liberation of Paris , the march was played again on the instructions of Dwight D. Eisenhower . When Charles de Gaulle visited Argentina in 1964, there was a scandal when the San Lorenzo March was intoned in honor of the French President, who, however, associated it with the German occupation of his country in World War II .

The march was also played at the coronation of George V and Elizabeth II , and since 1911 it has framed the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace . During the Falklands War , the San Lorenzo March was not performed in Great Britain.
