The San Miguel Islands (also Tilianu Islands) are a group of islands in the north of Papua New Guinea . Politically, they are part of the Manus Province .

geography

The San Miguel Islands are a subset of the Admiralty Islands . They are located in the St. Andrew Strait region, 17 km west of Rambutyo and 34 km southeast of Manus , the Fedarb Islands are 8.5 km southwest.

The group consists of two closely spaced, ring-shaped atolls and six small islands. The northern atoll, called the Loraine Island (also Tilianu, 2 km by 1 km), consists of several islands that enclose an inner lagoon . Anabat (also Anobat), 1.1 km south of Loraine, is the larger part of the group with a maximum extension of 3.5 km. Anobat is more open than its northern counterpart, consists of an outer reef submarine to the east, south and west, and two small islands, one on the northeastern edge of the reef and one inside the lagoon.

history

The islands have probably been around since around 1500 BC. Inhabited by Melanesians . The area came under German administration in 1885 and belonged to German New Guinea since 1899 . During the First World War the islands were conquered by Australian troops and after the war administered as a mandate of the League of Nations of Australia. The islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1944, but returned to Australian administration in 1949 until Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975.
