San Antonio is a city and district in the Central Department in Paraguay with about 66,300 inhabitants. It is located on the Paraguay River in the greater Asunción area and has an important port.

history

In 1679, a fort called San Antonio de la Frontera was built at this point on the river . In 1782 the Franciscans founded a “reduction” for the indigenous population at this location (cf. Jesuit reduction ). During the Triple Alliance War , the Brazilian troops landed in its port to embark on the historic battle of Ytororó. In 1890 the place was re-established by the German immigrant Gustav Konrad Goetz and his family. After his death, however, his relatives left the place, which then remained uninhabited again. From April 23, 1903, families settled again, mostly Germans, French, Spaniards and Italians. This date is considered the official day of the re-establishment. On May 30, 1917, the US company IPC opened a frozen meat factory, which was the largest employer in the area. The factory closed in 1978 and reopened in 1981 by new owners under the name Industria Paraguaya Frigorífica SA .

economy

In addition to the frozen meat factory, there are also the beverage manufacturers Pepsi and Bebidas del Paraguay SA as well as several energy companies that store fuel for planes from the nearby international airport and petroleum that is delivered via the port of San Antonio.
