Church tower

The Roman Catholic Church of San Bartolomé in Gavín , a district of the municipality of Biescas in the Spanish province of Huesca in the autonomous community of Aragon , was built from the 10th century. Today's hermitage has been a protected architectural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1982 .

history

The church consecrated to the Apostle Bartholomäus stands today outside the village between meadows. Nothing is known of the history of its origins; it may have belonged to an abandoned village. Construction probably began in the 10th century, the tower is dated between 1050 and 1060. The churches of the historical Serrablo region show similarities, they have no sculpted elements and are assigned to Mozarabic architecture .

description

Mozarabic window opening in the tower

San Bartolomé has a nave and a square apse . The rectangular tower attached to the south has neither an entrance nor a window in its basement, as it was probably used as a defense tower . On its top floor it has sound arcades on all sides . The tower, originally covered by a wooden roof, is now finished with a stone roof.
