The cardinal title of Cardinal Priest of San Corbiniano was given by Pope Benedict XVI. with the elevation of the eponymous Roman parish church of San Corbiniano to the title church re-created in the Apostolic Letter Purpuratis Patribus of November 20, 2010 .

history

In Purpuratis Patribus, Pope Benedict justified the creation of the new title with the need to have a sufficient number of titles available for the increasing number of cardinals. At the same time, with the selection of the church in the new Infernetto district, he expanded the title significantly from "Old Rome".

A peculiarity was that the church was not yet finished when the title was created and when it was first awarded during the consistory of November 20, 2010 . The creation of the title and creation of the first title holder, Reinhard Marx, coincided with the commemoration day of the Munich diocese patron Korbinian , in whose name the parish and church were only renamed in 2008. Cardinal Marx was able to take possession of his titular church on June 5, 2011 after it was on March 20, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. had been consecrated.
