San Giacomo Apostolo is a Roman Catholic church in the historic center of Ascoli Piceno . The building stands alone in the center of the Piazza della Fortuna, surrounded by many historical buildings, and shows the characteristics and composition of local Romanesque art, with a bit of Gothic influence.
History and architecture
The church was built after 1250 using local travertine , a stone that most of the buildings in the historic center of the town of Piceno are made of. It is a good example of Romanesque architecture with its structural features, such as the facade with a rose window consisting of twelve small columns and five majolica bowls arranged in the shape of a cross.
Presumably it was supplemented with two elegant portals and a bell tower as early as the beginning of the 14th century , which characterizes the structure and brings it in line with the other towers of the nobility and the bell towers nearby. As Cesare Mariotti notes, in this church, as in Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio , the portals show great attention to their "pure forms", which are adorned with twisted columns, frames of flower friezes and lunettes with high-relief sculptures.
In the years between 1917 and the fascist period, between 1935 and 1936, it was restored and also intervened in the defacements and changes made in the centuries before the twentieth century. The apse , the west entrance and the monoforias have been restored. A previously unknown subterranean structure was also discovered.
Inside and outside
Its interior consists of a single ship , which is divided into four rooms. It has fresco decorations made by unknown artists during the 14th century. Other decorative items, however, come from the master of Offida , a well-known painter from the second half of the 14th century who worked and was active in the Piceno area and who left various images in various Romanesque churches in the city.
The exterior masonry of the building is smooth and consists of travertine blocks that are bevelled fairly precisely. On the two longer sides there are four side doors, two small doors to the presbytery and two larger doors for the faithful.
