San Giovanni Battista is a church in Ponte allo Spino, municipality of Sovicille , Province of Siena , Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino .
History and description
First mentioned in 1189, it is one of the most interesting Romanesque buildings in the Siena region.
The parish church consists of three naves , which are separated by cross-shaped pillars and closed with apses . The last yoke of the central nave has a higher barrel vault with a tiburio , which is decorated on the outside with hanging arches and with step-shaped diamonds and circles.
In the facade , divided horizontally by a frame, there is a portal and a large monoforium . The differently designed capitals are of high quality. The bell tower, built in the Lombard style, has coupling windows and monoforias.
Inside is a panel by Bartolomeo Neroni , known as Il Riccio ( 16th century ), with the Madonna and Child, angels, saints and a bishop.
