San Giovanni Battista ( St. John the Baptist ) is a modern Roman Catholic church building in the small mountain village of Mogno , municipality of Lavizzara , in the Swiss canton of Ticino . The church was designed by Mario Botta and built in 1992–1996.

prehistory

The background to the construction was the complete destruction of the old baroque village church of Mogno together with numerous houses by an avalanche in 1986. After a long phase of planning and discussion, the reconstruction committee decided to undertake a striking, forward-looking project and develop the renowned Lugano architect Botta. The church has attracted numerous visitors since its completion.

architecture

Botta designed the church as an interplay of diverse natural and spiritual symbolism . He gave it the shape of a tower-like oval with a 45 degree incline and a circular glass roof. As building material, he chose marble and gneiss in alternating layers, thereby creating an attractive light-dark effect. The interior is rectangular in plan; the walls change from the roof to the orthogonal floor in a gradual transition. The altar stands in front of a quasi- Byzantine arched, stepped passage niche, behind which the sacristy is located - because of the hillside location, it is underground and invisible from the outside. The entrance on the opposite side is hidden on the outside under a small stair-shaped aqueduct , on the inside behind a column. The water staircase, through which the water flows from the roof when it rains, continues inside under the glass roof in an arched " heavenly ladder ". Two further niches on the narrow sides of the room set additional archaic accents in the postmodern context. Only a few rows of benches made of light wood adjust the stone floor, which is also designed in a light-dark alternation.
