Mogno is a village in the municipality of Lavizzara in the district of Vallemaggia in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . Until 1936 Mogno was an independent political municipality . The place is known nationwide for the church of San Giovanni Battista , which was designed by the Ticino architect Mario Botta .
geography
Mogno is 1180 m above sea level. M. on the left side of the Val Lavizzara through which the Maggia flows .
history
The place was inhabited all year round until the 18th century and has served as a mountain hut ever since . In 1936 Mogno, until then the property of the municipalities of Fusio , Peccia and Prato-Sornico , was assigned to the municipality of Fusio, which in 2004 became part of the municipality of Lavizzara.
On April 25, 1986, the old church, built in 1636, and a dozen houses in the village were destroyed by an avalanche. At this time there were no residents in the place, so no one was harmed.
In recent years, due to the growing tourism, several houses have been renovated and expanded, some of which are now inhabited all year round. However, there is still no tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants or shops.
