The cardinal title of Cardinal Priest of San Giovanni Maria Vianney was given by Pope Benedict XVI. On the occasion of the public consistory of February 18, 2012 , the Roman parish church of the same name, San Giovanni Maria Vianney, was raised to the title church .

With the naming of the Church of San Giovanni Maria Vianney, Pope Benedict increased the number of available titles and also expanded the range of title churches from "Ancient Rome".
