Ponnamaravathi (Tamil: பொன்னமராவதி) is a small town with about 15,000 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . A medieval open-air temple was built here in the Chola period.

location

Ponnamaravathi lies at an altitude of approx. 150 m above sea level. d. About 37 km (driving distance) southwest of the district capital Pudukkottai . The almost tropical climate is mostly humid; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months October to December.

population

The population of Ponnamaravathi is over 92.5% Hindus ; on Muslims account for about 5.5% and about 1.5% are Christians . Other religions are extremely rare among the rural population in southern India. The male and female proportion of the population are approximately the same.

economy

The inhabitants live almost exclusively from agriculture. Small traders and craftsmen have settled in the town center, who also benefit from the good transport links.

history

The area around Ponnamaravathi belonged to the Pallava Empire in the early Middle Ages , which was gradually taken over by the regaining Chola Empire in the 9th century . In the 13th century, the Madurai- based Pandya dynasty took power, but gave it to the Vijayanagar Empire in the 14th century .

Attractions

The main attraction of the place is of the Hindu god Shiva consecrated Rajendra-Choleeshwarar Temple . It stands within a small walled temple area and consists of a vestibule ( mandapa ) and the cella ( garbhagriha ), the outer walls of which are structured almost identically by pilasters and niches . The square-shaped tower structure above the cella resembles a building with false entrances and has a bulging, hood-like roof with a diamond-shaped clapboard decor.
