Ernst Erichsen was a son of the farmer and Reepschläger Johannes Erichsen (1861-1943) and his wife Margarethe, née Christiansen, (* 1866 in Böel-Möllmark ; † 1954). After attending elementary school in Ahneby and a preparatory institute in Barmstedt , he learned at the teachers' college in Uetersen . During the First World War he did a year and a half military service and then taught for three years in Sörup .

Erichsen passed the second teacher examination and began studying German, history and geography in 1923. He spent most of his studies at Kiel University and one semester each at universities in Hamburg and Vienna . In 1927 he did his doctorate under Otto Brandt on "The German Politics of Count Beust in 1870". He passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools and then worked as a student trainee in Königsberg and Kiel and as a study assessor in Plön and Wyk .

Erichsen had educational leave from 1931 to 1935, which he used for research. He then worked temporarily at an elementary school in Linden . At Easter 1938 he moved to the Theodor Storm School in Husum , where he became a teacher in the same year. He was considered a passionate teacher who never missed a single lesson in all years of service.

Erichsen was married to Christiane Dethleffsen (born January 14, 1904, † June 17, 1971) since July 12, 1935, whose father Peter Dethleffseen owned a farm on Freesmark . The couple had three sons and a daughter.

Life as a historian

Erichsen conducted extensive research and in 1932 described the school history of Norderdithmarschen in detail. As a by-product of this work, he wrote a year later a monograph on Klaus Groth's stay in the heath. By 1939 he had written three educational brochures, twelve magazine articles and 54 newspaper articles on school history and local history. During the Second World War he had to interrupt this work.

Erichsen continued his research from 1950 until the end of his life. During the vacation he stayed in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives in Schleswig . With the help of the knowledge gained there, he wrote extensive texts and short essays at home. In addition to studies of school history, he dealt to a large extent with the history of the poor and begging in Schleswig-Holstein in the first half of the 19th century.

From 1950 to 1967 he wrote around 120 articles that appeared in monthly books, yearbooks, magazines, commemorative publications, compilations, yearbooks and calendars. In addition, there were 600 articles for daily newspapers in the Schleswig region. In it he dealt with folklore and social history of fishing , Schleswig and Husum, the Schleswig Geest and North Frisia .
