San Juan Nepomuceno is a city and a district in the Caazapá department in Paraguay , 250 km from Asunción . The city has about 11,000 inhabitants, the district 39,200 inhabitants. It was named after the Bohemian Saint John Nepomuk . There are several national parks and a nature reserve in the district .

history

In July 1797, the indigenous Charavaná people submitted a request to the Spanish governor Lázaro de Rivera y Espinosa for land to be settled in the fertile basin of the Río Tebicuary . On November 20, 1797, the new settlement was founded as the last Jesuit reduction in Paraguay. On February 8, 1904, the city administration was created, which initially began to build bridges over the Río Capiibari .

There is a subtropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 22 ° C. The maximum temperatures are reached in December and January with values ​​of up to 40 ° C. The district is located in the eco-forest region Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná - BAAPA , which extends to Brazil . Until the 1960s, most of the area was covered with forest, but this increasingly had to give way to settlement and agriculture. The reforestation of eucalyptus trees began 20 years ago, but it is mainly for economic purposes. So far, 15,000 hectares have been reforested. The most common trees in the district include Lapacho , Cedrela spp. , Peltophorum dubium , Pterogyne nitens and Myrocarpus frondosus . The national parks of San Rafael and Caazapá and the private nature reserve Tapytá - managed by the Moisés Bertoni Foundation - have been established to protect flora and fauna .
