San Martino (Genoa)
San Martino d'Albaro (in Ligurian : San Martino d'Arbâ ), or simply San Martino, is a district of the northern Italian port city of Genoa . The district extends over the hill of Albaro, which separates the Val Bisagno from the Valle Sturla . It belongs to the municipality VIII Medio Levante and includes the districts of San Martino and Chiappeto . The district has a total of 15,592 inhabitants.
Before San Martino was incorporated into the city of Genoa in 1873, it was a small rural municipality made up of a few settlements surrounded by fields. After the connection, the entire area, as well as the adjacent, formerly autonomous quarters of Foce , San Fruttuoso and Marassi , was heavily urbanized. Today, San Martino is almost exclusively a residential area.
Inside the district is the main hospital of Genoa, the Ospedale San Martino , with the scientific structures in the fields of medicine , physics , mathematics , biology and geology of the University of Genoa . The Carlini Stadium is also located in the area . It is the second largest stadium in the city after the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Marassi, with a capacity of 5700 spectators.
Of the original settlement, only a few buildings around the Church of San Martino d'Albaro and San Rocco di Vernazza remain today .
